Vardaman sweet potato is a compact bush-type heirloom variety prized for its short vines, making it perfect for containers, raised beds, and smaller garden spaces. It produces smooth golden skin with deep orange flesh that is richly sweet, dense, and excellent for baking, roasting, frying, or casseroles. Its attractive purple foliage that matures to green also makes it an ornamental edible, while its strong yields and excellent storage quality make it a favorite for home growers.

  • Season of Interest: Planted after last frost (late May–June in Zone 6b); harvest in late summer to fall, typically 100–110 days after planting (August–October).
  • Light Requirements: Full Sun (6–6+ hours)
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, loose, sandy loam is ideal; avoid heavy clay (causes misshapen roots); pH 5.8–6.2 (slightly acidic); low to moderate fertility — avoid excess nitrogen to encourage root development over foliage
