Sweet basil, scientifically known as Ocimum basilicum, is a fragrant herb with a distinctive sweet, slightly spicy, anise-like flavor, famous for its use in Italian dishes like pesto and marinara sauce, as well as in Asian cuisine. It thrives in full sun, requires well-drained soil, and is grown for its leaves and flowers. To harvest, pinch off stems just above leaf nodes, and remove flower stalks to promote bushier growth and a longer leaf-producing life.
