Styrax japonicus 'Emerald Pagoda' is a truly standout selection of Japanese snowbell, chosen by the late J.C. Raulston at North Carolina State University in collaboration with the U.S. National Arboretum. Originally collected as cuttings from Korea, this wild variant displayed remarkable vigor and a striking difference from native populations—so much so that it earned its place as a premier cultivar.
'Emerald Pagoda' is the most vigorous and largest-flowered of the Styrax japonicus selections. Its starry white blooms, each a full inch across and lightly fragrant, appear in early summer and seem to float beneath the branches. As the petals fall, they create a magical white carpet that adds an unexpected layer of beauty to the landscape.
